Are You Paying Attention?

How do you pay attention to everything you have to do and everything you are responsible for? What strategies help you maintain long term success in a world of overabundant information and increasingly tight deadlines?

Trying harder, working faster, and increasing hours worked will only take you so far and may be completely counter productive for the long run because ”a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention" (Herbert Simon)

As a employee, manager, executive or entrepreneur, your attention is constantly solicited by people who seek your attention: employees who need management or clients who need answers, finances to track, emails to answer, meetings to attend, and social media to post.  We use the expression “to pay attention," for a reason–– your attention does have a price.

This article will help you as a business leader gain an awareness of how you currently pay attention and how to develop flexible attention strategies that will increase your performance and well being. If a leader fails to improve the quality of how s/he pays attention, s/he will not be able to effectively choose what to pay attention to.

To tackle this problem and offer solutions we will draw on the work of psychologist and researcher Les Fehmi, PhD. Dr. Fehmi pioneered research in neurofeedback unlocked the secret to how we pay attention. High performing executives and top sports teams use Dr. Fehmi’s work to increase their performance and wellbeing. “The problem with how we pay attention,” says Dr. Fehmi, “is one of the principal causes of human misery and suffering”.

We have outlined the effect of attention styles on performance and describe strategies to help the business leader focus his attention to increase peak performance and reduce stress. We will finish with a simple exercise based on Dr. Fehmi’s research that will you give right away the positive effect of this technique.
